Hello Family Adventurers!
Happy Thanksgiving Week to you all!
While we may get a bit of rain here this weekend, the forecast for the
desert for the week is looking fantastic - lows in the 40s and highs in
the mid to high 60s. It's not too late to join us for our annual
Thanksgiving camping trip! See the details for it, and all of our
adventures on our calendar of events...
We are a free, San Diego-based family nature club serving the county. Comprised of our "umbrella" club, Family Adventures in Nature also has several "nearby nature" clubs serving specific areas of the county. Check out our meetup group for details (www.meetup.com/familyadventuresinnature)!

Nature Traditions and the Holidays...
As we enter the busy holiday season, our goal
this year is to add nature back into people’s overflowing calendars by
inviting them to join us in some of our family traditions. We all know
the calming effect nature tends to have on us, yet we often get too busy
this time of year to take advantage of the free therapy right outside
our doors. By making something a tradition, a ritual, or an “annual”
event for your family nature club, members and friends are invited to
begin new traditions of their own...

This Week in Nature, 11/10/11
Well, we were all set to have a wonderful birthday celebration to commemorate the 2nd birthday of this club and it went off and had to predict rain for Saturday.
Unfortunately, Penasquitos Canyon closes with rain so we can't even have a rainy, muddy play day. That would have been a blast! The good news is, I rescheduled our birthday hike to Saturday, December 10th. Details below and on the meetup listing...

Lake Morena Camping!
I'll be adding pictures to this blog in the next couple of days...
Well this past weekend proved to be another successful gathering of families in nature! Some twelve families or so from our group went camping at Lake Morena and the weather was fantastic. Kids had lots of time to explore and adventure in nature, with the big boulders being the favorite gathering spot. One of the things I like best about camping is the built in unstructured time that kids have for nature play, adventuring and exploring.
On Friday and Saturday nights we gathered around the campfire, thanks to our hosts the Livingstons, and enjoyed good company and scrumptious s'mores! We also had a wonderful potluck with tons of terrific food on Saturday night.
Saturday afternoon led us to the nature trail, led by ranger Dale Noonkester. This proved to be an interesting introduction to local nature, including some history and information about Native Americans. He really did a good job engaging the kids along the way!
By Sunday, we were ready for the grand finale of the weekend... the long-awaited "Pumpkin Express" train ride out of Campo (less than a 10 minute drive from the campground). Most families chose between the 11:00 am and the 2:30 pm train that ended up back at the train museum, the haunted train and the "pumpkin patch". The latter was actually inside the building, likely due to anticipated heat in Campo, but the kids enjoyed picking out their pumpkins nonetheless.

The Pumpkin Express Train Ride to the Great Pumpkin Patch is sold out for both times, so if you didn't already reserve your seats, you'll have to try again another time.

I'm immersed in things to do, but find myself getting more and more excited about our camping trip this weekend. We're headed to Lake Morena with our group and there are quite a few families going. We'll explore the lake, go on a ranger-led hike, enjoy a potluck meal together and s'mores for sure! The trip will end with a visit to the train museum in Campo and a ride to the Great Pumpkin Patch on the Pumpkin Express!
As I start to get ready, I wonder if it would be helpful to some people to have some sort of a "camping check list" to help prepare... If so, what would you add to the list?

Introduction to our club

Welcome to Family Adventures in Nature,
San Diego!
We are happiest when exploring the outdoors, and love to do so with other families. Founded in November 2009, we currently have some 400+ members in our group. No worries, not everyone comes on every adventure! It seems that every group we get is just right for the location and we have yet to have a negative experience!San Diego!
Our club provides some 15 - 20 monthly outings, so you're sure to find something to fit your busy calendar. In addition to the "umbrella" club that mostly hosts weekend adventures, we also have several...
